Before Jailer blockbuster, Nelson's film with Thalapathy Vijay emerged as a big failure
The wait is over. Jailer 2, the much-anticipated sequel to Rajinikanth's 2023 blockbuster, has finally hit the theatres and is expected to do wonders at the box-office. According to Sacnilk.com reports, the action comedy has already collected an impressive Rs 16 crore. Jailer was the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2023, with box office collections that crossed Rs 650 crore worldwide. Yet, just a year before, the director’s magnum opus Beast, which featured Thalapathy Vijay, failed to make a mark at the box-office. Yet it did not make a dent on their bond. There were speculations that the superstar’s fans were miffed with the director regarding the lukewarm performance of Beast. However, the director silenced all naysayers by revealing that the actor had been the first one to text him to congratulate him on the film’s success.

In 2023, the director told OnManorama that he had once asked Vijay if he was upset with him about Beast’s underperformance, and the star reportedly left without saying a word. “We are always in touch. There is no connection between the Beast film and our relationship. Some liked the film, while some didn’t. We worked hard. I did exactly what was told to me. That chapter is over. Next time, I will do something different. Once, I asked him if he was angry with me. “The film is getting mixed reviews; that’s why I asked you.” On hearing that, he left without saying a word,” the director recalled.

Later, the superstar called him and asked if their bond was based on the fate of one film. He said he felt bad hearing him doubt his regard for Nelson. When the director reminded him that a lot of people were speculating that they had a fallout after Beast’s underwhelming performance, Vijay said, "That's different, and what we have between us is different. If ‘Beast’ didn’t work, we will do another film,” he had said.

When ‘Jailer’ was getting great responses, he messaged me, "Congratulations, Nelson, I am so happy for you.” No one knows all these things. Let people talk. We know what’s between us. It is better not to respond to such rumours. For people, such loose talk is just entertainment,” he said.

Jailer 2 has been produced by Kalanithi Maran through Sun Pictures. The film boasts a stellar cast. Aside from Rajinikanth, the movie also features veteran actors such as Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa, Rithvik R. S. J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vidya Balan, Anna Rajan and Jatin Sarna.
