Heat director Michael Mann on doing odd jobs
Mann, in a 2014 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, revealed that he was a taxi cab driver, a short order cook, as well as a janitor and construction worker when he was about 19 years old. The filmmaker shared that it was his father who pushed him to do these odd jobs.‘I was everything from a taxi cab driver to a short order cook when I was 19 to a janitor in the summers for the Chicago Flat Janitors Union while the janitors took their vacation for 3 weeks,’ said Mann back then, adding that the janitors typically appointed kids like him to dispose of garbage.
How odd jobs helped Michael Mann
Elaborating on the topic, Mann recalled that he would work part-time after school, on weekends, and even on summer breaks. These odd jobs, however, made the director more experienced and street-smart. ‘When I went to university, I found myself being one of very few people who had any experience on the street,’ he noted. In the same conversation, Mann stated that he also had a deeper and more personal understanding of how hard life was for the construction workers on the West Side of Chicago, for tenements, and for itinerant groups of fast food chefs. Eventually, he attended college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and pursued his dream of filmmaking at the London Film School.
Michael Mann’s film projects
One of Mann’s most fascinating projects was Heat, headlined by Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. This classic cat-and-mouse game brought two powerful and opposing characters to the fore as they navigate the underworld and crime, with a standout scene being between the protagonist and antagonist where they make confessions over coffee at a diner.Mann’s latest directorial was Ferrari (2023), starring Adam Driver, Penelope D’Cruz and Shailene Woodley in the lead. He is supposed to start filming for the Heat sequel sometime next year.
