After cricketer, Prithvi Shaw faced an eight-month ban from cricket a few days ago for testing positive for a banned substance, the spotlight is on doping in cricket. Though the youngster did not gain any performance enhancement from the use of Terbutaline - a drug found in cough syrups, it is in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned substance list.

In a news interview recently, BCCI's anti-doping manager, Abhijit Salvi spoke of a pocket guide that helps players know of banned substances.




Here's a look at what it contains:
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) anti-doping pocket guide has all the names of medicines that are forbidden in a list. This guide has been given to players since 2010. It is accompanied by an audio-visual and power point presentations as part of the BCCI's anti-doping education programme. These are conducted at various levels from the grass root as well as all over the country.

A copy of the pocket book is also on the BCCI's website under the anti-doping category. There is an introduction with 18 articles and five appendixes. These include - violation terms, testing, the banned list, fair hearing, etc. All these are in great detail explaining and outlining the anti-doping policy.

While the ICC became a member of WADA in 2006, the BCCI came on board in 2009. There is also a BCCI helpline since 2016 to help cricketers know if the medicines and supplements they are prescribed are banned or safe. The pocket guide has the helpline numbers right at the start to help players.
