Batwara 1947 OTT release details: When and where will the Sunny Deol starrer action drama stream after theatrical run

The Independence Day weekend saw the release of several big films, and one of them was Batwara 1947, the Partition-era drama directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. Led by Sunny Deol and backed by Aamir Khan Productions, the film arrived in cinemas on August 14, 2026. While the movie is still playing in theatres, many viewers are already wondering when it will make its way to OTT platforms.

Here is what is known so far about the film’s digital release, streaming prospects and box office performance.

When could Batwara 1947 release on OTT?

There has been no official announcement regarding the OTT release date of Batwara 1947 or the platform that will stream it.


However, going by the usual trend followed by major Hindi film releases, movies generally arrive on streaming services around four to eight weeks after their theatrical debut. If that timeline is followed, Batwara 1947 could become available for home viewing sometime between late September and October 2026.

That said, the film's digital release plans remain uncertain because producer Aamir Khan has previously explored alternatives to the traditional OTT model for some of his projects. As a result, the streaming premiere could take longer than expected.

Reported OTT deal became talking point

A recent Filmfare report claimed that an OTT platform had earlier offered more than Rs 60 crore for the digital rights of the film when it was still titled Lahore 1947.

According to the report, Sunny Deol and Aamir Khan reportedly had different views on the proposal. Sunny was said to be in favour of accepting the offer, while Aamir chose to explore other distribution possibilities after the theatrical run.

The report stated, “It was then, that a major OTT platform offered 60+ crores for the rights of Batwara 1947, which was called Lahore 1947 back then.”

The same report claimed that Sunny had a profit-sharing arrangement under which he would receive 50 per cent of the film's profits, making the OTT offer particularly significant for him.

Despite the reported disagreement, both actors continued promoting the film together and also appeared on Kaun Banega Crorepati during the promotional campaign.

What is Batwara 1947 about?

The film is set against the backdrop of India's Partition in 1947. The story follows a displaced Muslim family that moves into a haveli in Lahore after migration, only to discover that an elderly Hindu woman is still living there.

Reports suggest that the movie is inspired by Asghar Wajahat's acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, O Jamyai Nai.

Cast and box office performance

The film features a large ensemble cast including Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, Karan Deol, Abhimanyu Singh, Rukhsar Rehman, Isha Sandhir, Kanikka Kapur, Mithun Chakraborty and others.

According to reported figures, Batwara 1947 was made on a budget estimated between Rs 120 crore and Rs 150 crore.

At the box office, the film has faced a difficult run. After opening in the Rs 5-6 crore range, it witnessed growth over the first weekend before slowing down during the weekdays. Trade reports suggest the film crossed the Rs 30 crore mark in India by Day 5.

The Rajkumar Santoshi directorial is also facing strong competition from Emraan Hashmi's Awarapan 2, which has emerged as the stronger performer at the box office.
