What is Vijay Sethupathi's Baththa about?

Baththa has been directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan and its story is set in 1986 in Madras. Vijay Sethupathi plays the role of Bathvachalam, who is a local gangster known for his intimidating reputation.

The story takes an unexpected turn when an eight-year-old schoolboy accidentally locks the gangster inside an abandoned school toilet. Stranded in an unfamiliar situation, Bathvachalam has to deal with hunger, isolation and circumstances that leave little room for the authority he usually commands.

The encounter gradually develops into an unusual bond between the gangster and the boy. Rather than relying entirely on crime and confrontation, the film uses their situation to explore the vulnerable side of a man whom others fear.

Baththa cast and crew

Alongside Vijay Sethupathi, the film features Malayalam actress Lijomol Jose in a key role. Balaji Tharaneetharan has written and directed the project, marking another collaboration between the filmmaker and Sethupathi.

The duo previously worked together on Naduvula Konjam Pakkath Kaanom and Seethakaathi. Baththa is their third film together.

Sai Abhyankkar has composed the music, while filmmaker Atlee presents the movie. A for Apple Studios, Cine1 Studios and Star Studio18 are associated with its production.
