Balika Vadhu star lost her father, a construction worker, when she was 5 months old, grew up in a chawl. Today, she owns two homes in Mumbai

Mahima Makwana’s Bollywood journey proves that when it comes to success, nothing tops perseverance and a can-do attitude. Recently, her inspiring success story was shared by the positivity portal The Better India. The Balika Vadhu star grew up in the chawl (slum) and now, at just 26, owns two homes.

Mahima, who has won critical acclaim for her performance in the Netflix TV series Musafir Cafe, lost her father, a construction worker, when she was just five months old. She started to act at the age of nine to support her family and auditioned relentlessly. After school hours, she travelled across Mumbai through buses to give auditions – all because her mother dreamed of owning a home.

At 13, she landed her first leading role. Next year, she bought her first home and their first car. As a young artist, she made appearances in CID, Aahat, Miley Jab Hum Tum, and Jhansi Ki Rani before making her television debut in Mohe Rang De on Colours TV. She portrayed child Gudiya/Gauri in the Colours television series Balika Vadhu in 2009.


Makwana was chosen to play the parallel lead in Sawaare Sabke Sapne... Preeto on Imagine TV in 2011. Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke, a popular soap drama on Zed TV, was her first significant starring role. In an interview, Mahima stated that it was difficult for her to get to this stage of her career and that, before Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke, she had taken part in over 500 auditions.

She missed most of her school years as she was focused on building her career. She was often replaced in projects and underpaid. However, the 2021 film Antim (produced by Salman Khan) changed her fate. Though the film was not a box-office success, her performance as Manda, Aayush Sharma’s character Rahul’s love interest, received appreciation. In 2026, her powerful turn as Preeti in Musafir Cafe also got praise.

Today, she owns two homes in Mumbai.
