Backrooms is now streaming online after a record box office run
Backrooms has gone from being a viral internet horror concept to one of the biggest surprise box office successes of 2026. Made on a modest budget, the psychological horror film stunned the industry by earning more than $360 million worldwide and quickly became one of the year's most talked-about releases. The film, directed by Kane Parsons in his feature debut, drew audiences with its unsettling atmosphere and unique story inspired by his hugely popular YouTube analog horror series.

Now, after a successful theatrical run that lasted longer than expected, Backrooms has finally arrived on digital platforms. But unlike a regular OTT release, there is one important catch viewers should know.

Where and how to watch Backrooms online

As of July 14, Backrooms is available through premium video-on-demand (PVOD). Instead of streaming as part of a subscription, the film can be rented or purchased digitally on Prime Video and Apple TV. It is also available for purchase on platforms such as Fandango at Home and YouTube Movies & TV, according to international reports.

The purchase price is $24.99 (around Rs 2,400), while renting the movie costs $19.99 (approximately Rs 1,900). Those who choose the rental option have 30 days to start watching the film, and once playback begins, they get 48 hours to finish it.

Another thing worth noting is that viewers do not need an active Prime Video or Apple TV+ subscription to watch the movie. However, they must have an account on the platform they choose to complete the rental or purchase.

Why this isn't a regular OTT release

The digital debut comes after A24 reportedly changed its usual release strategy because of the film's exceptional performance in theatres. The studio is known for moving many of its films to digital platforms after around five weekends in cinemas. However, Backrooms continued drawing audiences, prompting A24 to extend its theatrical window to seven weekends, or roughly 45 days, before making it available on PVOD.

During its sixth week in theatres, the studio also released Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition, an extended version that added around 15 minutes of post-credit footage for fans who wanted more from the film's eerie world.

What is Backrooms about?

Set in 1990, the story follows Clark, a struggling furniture store owner and former architect who comes across a mysterious doorway hidden beneath his store.

The entrance leads to the "Backrooms," a strange alternate dimension filled with endless yellow hallways, empty rooms and unsettling spaces where the normal rules of reality no longer seem to apply.

When Clark becomes trapped inside the maze-like world, he manages to communicate with his therapist, Dr. Mary Kline. She decides to enter the mysterious dimension in search of him, only to encounter terrifying entities and increasingly disturbing places that blur the line between reality and nightmare.

The feature film expands on the unsettling universe first introduced through Kane Parsons' viral YouTube series, which itself was inspired by the internet's famous "Backrooms" creepypasta and meme.

Chiwetel Ejiofor leads the film as Clark, while Renate Reinsve plays therapist Dr. Mary Kline. The supporting cast includes Mark Duplass as Async scientist Phil, Finn Bennett as Bobby Franklin, Lukita Maxwell as Kat Taylor, Avan Jogia as Async explorer Naren Warne, Krista Kosonen as Nora Kline and Robert Bobroczkyi as the terrifying Pirate Clark.
