'Baa' of 'Kyunki', Sudha Shivpuri, passes away

NEW DELHI: MUMBAI: Veteran actress Sudha Shivpuri, who became a household name after essaying the role of ' Baa' in popular TV show "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi", passed away on Wednesday morning due to multiple organ failure, family sources said.

Mushtaq Shiekh, a well-known author, screenplay writer and film commentator, took to micro-blogging site Twitter to announce the demise of Sudha Shivpuri. She died at around 6 AM at a suburban hospital in Andheri, where she was admitted since two weeks. Shivpuri was out of action for almost a year due to ill health.

Shiekh also shared that Shivpuri's last rites will be performed at around 2.30 pm at a crematorium in Oshiwara on Wednesday.

"Sudha was in coma for last three days in Criticare hospital in Andheri. She passed away due to multiple organ failure resulting from an infection," Sandeep Basu, a family friend, told PTI.

The 77-year-old actress had spent over two months in a hospital in Mumbai last year.

On Dec 2, 2013, she suffered a stroke, which affected the lower brain and her basic motor skills. She had spent considerable time in the ICU during her hospital stay.

Apart from Ekta Kapoor's "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi", where she played the family matriarch, Sudha acted in several TV soaps including "Rajni", "Kasamh Se", "Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil", "Maniben.com", "Missing", "Rishtey", "Sheeshe Ka Ghar", "Waqt Ka Dariya", "Daman", "Santoshi Ma", "Yeh Ghar", "Sarhadein" and "Bandhan". She has also featured in films like "Swami", "Insaaf Ka Tarazu", "Hamari Bahu Alka" and "Pinjar".

A theatre enthusiast, Sudha married actor Om Shivpuri, who passed away in 1990. She has two children - son Vineet and daughter Ritu.
