Here are some handy tips to avoid mistakes after joining a new workplace.

REPORT TO A FRIEND/RELATIVE

Are you reporting to a friend or relative? Get reassigned if possible. Professional expectations, targets, deadlines, increments and promotions will sabotage your personal equation. Coworkers will question your competency.

EXPECTING TRUST

Credibility has to be earned each time you switch jobs. Past glories cut little ice with new teammates who have been around longer in the company. Your new colleagues will judge you from your initial interactions with them.

ASK FOR A ROLE CHANGE

Did you notice a better role in the firm? Don’t ask for a change immediately else your manager will assume that you are insincere and cannot be relied upon. Prove yourself in your current role and then ask for changes.

TRY TO CHANGE THINGS AT ONCE

Are you uncomfortable with the culture or feel some work processes can be improved? If you are a team leader, don’t impose changes until you have the trust of the team. If you are a team member, win respect first.

EXPECT SPOON FEEDING

Ask for help in understanding systems but do not expect a coworker to do your work for you. Choose to learn by observation or research over asking people to spare time for training.
