Given the recent revolutionary judgments that the Indian courts have passed lately, it's tempting not to weigh in. Author Amish Tripathi, who says that he rarely comments on political issues, too couldn't resist. Speaking with veteran journalist Shekhar Gupta at an event in Mumbai, Tripathi spoke on the recent landmark judgment of striking down triple talaq.

"Women's oppression is a societal problem and all of us need to fight this battle," he said, adding that religion should be far removed from law.

"For our law to be truly secular, it should be divorced from religion." Batting for a universal bill of rights, he added, "In a multi-religious society like India, we should have a universal bill of rights, where every individual has rights guaranteed by the Constitution. Social issues can be resovled within communities, but if there's a dispute, then the court will not look at your religious background but only at the bill of rights," said Tripathi, painting a picture of an ideal world for his audience.
