A pile of discarded plastic pipes may not look like a wildlife sanctuary, but in north-western Australia, researchers are testing whether mining waste can be turned into shelter for one of the country's most threatened marsupials. The idea is simple: bury high-density polyethene (HDPE) pipes inside waste-rock piles left behind after mining, creating artificial dens that can provide northern quolls with protection from harsh temperatures and humidity. A 2026 research note published in Pacific Conservation Biology found that quolls were entering and leaving the experimental shelters, suggesting the unusual approach could have a role in post-mining habitat restoration.

Why do northern quolls need artificial dens?

Northern quolls (Dasyurus hallucatus) are endangered and have suffered major population declines across northern Australia. The Australian Government identifies habitat loss and fragmentation, inappropriate fire regimes, introduced predators and the spread of toxic cane toads among the major threats facing the species, with mining a particular concern in parts of its range. The problem is not simply finding somewhere for the animals to hide. Natural dens need to provide protection from predators while buffering extreme environmental conditions.

A previous study published in Conservation Science and Practice found that natural quoll dens were generally cooler and deeper than unused crevices. Some artificial dens created by mining companies offered similar thermal conditions but had shallower cavities, less surrounding habitat, more visits from feral cats and fewer small mammal prey. That research highlighted an important challenge: building a den is not necessarily the same as recreating suitable habitat.


What did researchers build from mining waste?

The new study by Mitchell T. Ladyman and Neil E. Pettit explored whether readily available HDPE pipes could be incorporated into waste-rock dump designs at former mining landscapes. The researchers monitored the experimental dens using remote cameras and tracking pads. During the study, northern quolls were recorded entering and leaving the structures. The artificial dens recorded a mean maximum temperature of 33.6°C, with a 2.1°C range, while mean maximum humidity was 62.1%, with a 21.2% range, conditions the researchers said were comparable with natural denning sites.

But the researchers are cautious. The trial was small, and they say replicated studies are still needed to establish the best pipe length, depth, positioning and surrounding landscape conditions. The cameras confirmed quolls were using the entrances, but that does not yet prove the structures can support long-term breeding or establish permanent populations.

Earlier trials showed why the idea matters

This is not Australia's first attempt to use artificial dens to help northern quolls. In 2022, conservationists in Far North Queensland began building 12 trial dens from pipes, rocks and rubble, with the aim of encouraging quolls to move into areas beyond their existing range. ABC News reported that the project was designed partly to reconnect isolated populations.

Terrain NRM biodiversity leader Andrew Dennis told ABC that the team hoped the structures could help “draw them out even further” into suitable habitat. The urgency is clear. Northern quolls have been devastated in many regions by cane toads, which can poison the animals when eaten.

A small shelter for a species under pressure

There is also evidence that northern quolls can persist when conservationists protect the right landscape. In January 2026, the Australian Wildlife Conservancy announced that a northern quoll had been detected at Piccaninny Plains Wildlife Sanctuary in Cape York for the first time in more than 80 years. The animal was captured by a motion-sensor camera near a rocky outcrop that had apparently remained largely unburnt.

AWC wildlife ecologist Dr Helena Stokes described the discovery as a potential “roadmap” for future surveys and research. The new artificial-den research offers another possible tool: instead of leaving post-mining landscapes with piles of waste rock, some of that material could potentially be designed to provide wildlife refuges. For now, the pipes are an experiment rather than a proven conservation solution. But if further trials show that the shelters can support breeding and long-term occupation, yesterday's mining waste could become part of a very different future one where damaged landscapes once again provide a home for endangered wildlife.
