At IPL auction, Prithvi Shaw was bought for Rs 1.2 cr, 6-times his base price of Rs 20 L

Shaw has been selected by Delhi Daredevils to play for his first IPL.

‘The World Cup was more important than the auction’.

Prithvi Shaw is in Visakhapatnam, talking about Virar. The young cricketer was there for a shoot a few weeks ago, as he got set for the Delhi Daredevils team camp, which commenced a few days later.

Shaw was one of the big earners of the IPL auction — he was signed by Delhi for Rs 1.2 crore, which was six-times his base price of Rs 20 lakh.

A long journey
The boy from Virar has come a long way. Earlier this year, 18-year-old Shaw captained India to the U-19 World Cup title. Now, he is on the threshold of another milestone — his first IPL.

Remembering his early days, Shaw said his father Pankaj would accompany him from their home in Virar to Churchgate for practice. “It was difficult but my dad was there with me,” Shaw said over the phone. “We had a group of train friends. It was a twohour journey, but I enjoyed it. There would be singing and card games.”

The coach’s advice
With the IPL auction and the final of the U-19 World Cup around the same time, Shaw said it was difficult for coach Rahul Dravid to keep the youngsters focussed. “Before the auction, Rahul sir told us, ‘You focus on your game, everything will go good’. The World Cup was more important at that time, not the IPL. We all knew why we were there in New Zealand, why we worked for 14-15 months — to win that World Cup.”

Winning strategy
Excited over his debut, Shaw is hoping to build on his New Zealand experience. “I learnt a lot from my U-19 time, the most being from Rahul sir,” he said. “I learnt about being physically fit, captaincy and the things that really matter when it comes to being a leader and a batsman. Rahul sir would always give us positive feedback during practice and matches. He wished all of us luck for the IPL and said we would learn a lot from the experience.”

Starting point
“School cricket is where we all start. The journey of a cricketer starts from there, and it was the same for me,” the budding cricketer said. “My parents were very supportive. I made tons of runs, and got an opportunity to play for Mumbai. Suddenly people knew who I was and the cameras were on me. Getting the recognition matters when you are playing school cricket,” he said as he headed back for the shoot.
