Harsh Goenka shares how they awarded certain cricketers despite them playing for a rival sponsor.
Newly-minted politician Gautam Gambhir returned to his cricketing roots in Mumbai last week. The former Indian opener and twice World Cup winner delivered the keynote address at the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards. Gambhir traded his election campaign look for a more neutral white shirt, trousers and loafers combo, and then made an interesting corporate point.
“Their [the CEAT Awards’] credibility can be gauged from the fact that I played with an MRF bat, but still won the award in 2011. So well done CEAT, that they didn’t bring in their corporate rivalries,” Gambhir said. Actually, he read his speech, but he had an explanation for that. “You may think why I’m reading my speech,” Gambhir said. “Because the last 20 days I have been making political speeches and didn’t want the speeches to get mixed up.”

Asked how the awards jury kept professional rivalry out of their decision to honour Gambhir, Harsh Goenka, chairman, RPG Enterprises, which owns CEAT, said, “In the past, CEAT Cricket Rating felicitated Steve Waugh, Gautam Gambhir and, this year, Virat Kohli was the International Cricketer of the year. We have always kept the essence of the awards intact — excellence in the sport and performance is key to being recognised, not the brand a cricketer endorses. This ensures authenticity and legitimacy of the awards.”
Kohli aside, this year’s winners included Cheteshwar Pujara (International Test cricketer of the year), Rohit Sharma (International ODI cricketer of the year), Jasprit Bumrah (International bowler of the year), Smriti Mandhana (International Woman Cricketer), Ashutosh Aman (Domestic Cricketer) and Mohinder Amarnath (Lifetime Achievement). Afghanistan legspinner Rashid Khan won the award for outstanding bowling in T20 and Australian batsman Aaron Finch was named the T20 player of the year.
