Actor Sumona Chakravarti has returned to social media after staying away for nearly two and a half months, and the reason behind her absence has left many fans concerned. The Kapil Sharma Show actor revealed that she recently underwent surgery for endometriosis after battling the condition for years. Along with sharing an update on her recovery, Sumona opened up about how the experience has changed the way she looks at life and social media.

Sumona reveals endometriosis surgery after months-long break

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Sumona said she had intentionally stayed away from social media over the past two months. Describing herself as having been "under a rock," she revealed that she underwent excision surgery for endometriosis on May 4 after the condition worsened despite years of trying to manage it.

The actor, who had first spoken publicly about being diagnosed with Stage IV endometriosis in 2021, said the illness had progressed significantly. She added that she felt it was finally time to let go of the condition through surgery after living with it for so long.

Looking back on the past few weeks, Sumona said she had focused entirely on healing, both physically and mentally. She shared that she is now feeling much better and expressed her gratitude to Dr. Anshumala Kakkal Kulkarni and her medical team, crediting them for supporting and understanding her throughout the difficult journey.

The actor clarified that she was not opening up about her surgery to seek sympathy or promote herself. Instead, she said "the experience had brought about a major shift in her perspective on life, which is why she wanted to share it with others."

A fresh approach to social media

Sumona also talked on how her break changed the way she views social media. She admitted that, at one point, she wanted to completely disconnect from platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp. However, she soon realised that staying away entirely was not practical because of work, family and personal responsibilities.

"After all, I'm not retiring to the mountains just yet. I have work. Family. Friends. Life," she wrote.

The Bade Achhe Lagte Hain actor also shared she was never in the race for likes, comments or followers. In fact, she wishes social media to became a space to have meaningful conversations, "What I do want to change, however, is the way I use social media. I was never chasing the number game, be it likes, comments or followers.

She hopes to create a space where conversations can revolve around topics that matter, including endometriosis, physical and mental health, perimenopause, general wellness, travel, books, pets, food, independence and child-free lifestyles. While she admitted she is still figuring out how to make that vision a reality, she said these are the conversations she genuinely wants to encourage.

Opening up about online trolling

The actor also spoke candidly about the darker side of social media. According to Sumona, many comments on her posts over the years have targeted her appearance or contained inappropriate and vulgar remarks. She noted that such comments have largely come from men.

She further wrote, "So, what's the solution? Yes, I'm an actor. A female one. I'll attract a certain gentry. It comes with the territory. I'm going to continue working and acting till my very last breath. I've managed to keep most of my personal life private all these years, and I'd like to continue doing that."

The actor also reiterated that she has always preferred to keep most aspects of her personal life private. However, she believes that sharing her journey with endometriosis could help others going through similar health challenges, making it worthwhile to speak about it publicly.

She concluded the post, "One of the reasons I'm putting in the effort to write this instead of simply posting a picture is because I'll know how many people are actually willing to slow down, read through it, and decide to stay... maybe even engage! The difference between brewed coffee and instant coffee. You get the gist."
