For most children, lunchtime at school is a break from lessons. But 13-year-old Abigail Stein noticed that for some of her friends, eating came with a very different feeling: anxiety over whether an apparently harmless meal might contain an ingredient capable of triggering a serious allergic reaction. The Nashville, Tennessee, student decided to tackle that fear with something already found on almost every lunch table: a spoon.

Abigail's invention is called Allergy Spoon. It is a smart utensil designed to detect allergens in food and change colour as a warning. The idea has earned Abigail a place among the 10 national finalists in the 2026 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

Abigail, a student at Harding Academy, said the project grew from watching friends with food allergies worry about what they could safely eat. Allergen-detection technology already exists, but Abigail wanted to explore whether it could be made simpler and incorporated into an ordinary object children could use themselves. “I believe that science shouldn’t just stay in a lab,” Abigail said while explaining her project, adding that it should address everyday problems children actually experience. Her goal is ambitious: instead of depending on an expensive standalone detector, she wants the utensil itself to provide a visible warning.


How does the Allergy Spoon work?

The concept is straightforward from a user's perspective. A person would place the spoon in food, and the utensil is designed to change colour when it detects a targeted allergen. Abigail is still developing the technology, so it should not be treated as a substitute for established food-allergy precautions or medical advice.

The project's significance becomes clearer against the scale of the problem. Food allergies can cause reactions ranging from relatively mild symptoms to potentially fatal anaphylaxis, making avoidance of known allergens crucial. Abigail's philosophy is to make that protection more accessible. “You don’t need a $200 machine to change the world,” she said, arguing that sometimes the answer can be something as simple as “a better spoon.”

A small utensil tackling a much bigger fear

Abigail is one of 10 students aged 11 to 14 selected for this year's national competition. Discovery Education says the finalists were judged on creativity, scientific knowledge and their ability to communicate their ideas. Whether Allergy Spoon ultimately becomes an everyday product will depend on further development, testing and validation. But Abigail's idea already demonstrates an important part of invention: recognising a problem that other people have grown accustomed to living with. At just 13, she looked at the anxiety surrounding her friends' lunches and imagined a different possibility: what if the spoon in their hands could help tell them when their food wasn't safe?
