Ask Dr D: What kind of work ethic doesn't offend employees?

In his column, Dr D says that power equals work over time, not work overtime.

Dear Dr D,
March 1, as you may or may not know, is Employees Day in the US and Canada. In your country, it is the first of May, which comes up soon. Your readers may not know that May 1 is to mourn the institution of eight-hour working days and five-day weeks.

Work is worship, as we all know, and there is no reason for worship to stop after eight hours. In my company, we bless our partners (as we call workers) with a 996 schedule. They work from 9 am to 9 pm six days a week because slackers are not my brothers! 996: Now you can only get these benefits by working for me.


996: So, my young employees never have the need to say: “I’m bored” or “What’s on TV”.

996: It also has the advantage of being easy to remember. Just wake up and drag your a** to work.

The 54-year-old encouraged employees to embrace the overtime culture if they wished to flourish in the tech world. He was also known to dismiss people expecting a typical, eight-hours-a-day work routine.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is known for his temper outbursts, and his 'rage firings' have often made headlines. The 47-year-old, whose employees have reported incidents of extreme yelling, allegedly fires any employee who comes his way on a bad-temper day.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is known for his cut-throat management style as much as he is known for being the world's richest man. The top boss doesn't mince his words, and the e-commerce giant has gained a reputation for having a ruthless work culture.

As a leader, the 55-year-old is reported to be a difficult-to-please boss - who is easy to agitate. Stories of his comments including, "I'm sorry, did I take my stupid pills today?" and "Why are you ruining my life?" have often made it out of Amazon's office.

Bezos has reportedly been this way from the start. Productivity in the office place is more about efficiency and quality than about time. If you don’t get that, and as an owner you probably don’t, you cannot empathise with people who work.

As someone said: “I don’t mind coming to work, it’s the eight-hour wait to go home I cannot stand.” Power = work/time. This means power equals work over time, not work overtime.

Friendland, who joined the company in 2011, was pulled up and fired for using racially offensive language during a meeting with colleagues.
