Prince of Wales is the oldest and longest serving heir-apparent in British history.
He is one of the leading doctors in the country. He values his privacy (but not of his clients).

Dear Dr D,
Mum has been running the family business for 67 years. I am 70 and my Wikipedia entry reads “he is the oldest and longest serving heir-apparent in British history.”

The word “apparent” means, incidentally, that it is not a done deal. I have been waiting and training for six decades to take over this job and she may well decide not to give it to me in the end. And also, heaven knows when “the end” will finally arrive. Mum is 93 but her mother lived on to 101. Meanwhile in the rest of the world, there is a flurry of not so hostile takeovers. The papers tell me that the Thais have King Rama X, and the Japanese have their 126th emperor. I remain where I have remained since the 1950s. Think about what I am talking about here.

Churchill was prime minister when she took the throne and Nehru had only just begun his innings. She’s gone through Eden, Macmillan, Douglas-Home, Wilson, Heath, Callaghan, Thatcher, Major, Blair, Brown, Cameron and May. She was around before Britain joined the EU and will be around when we will leave it. Doc, I am a grandfather now, of four kids and god knows how many more to come. My sons have started balding. Will it ever be my turn to bat? Pray tell.

We abolished titles here in India so I cannot entirely empathise with your predicament, but I can understand it. You say “Will it ever be my turn to bat?” There’s a lot of people thinking the same thing here in India as we await May 23.
