India bid farewell to Asha Bhosle, one of the most iconic voices in modern Indian music, who passed away at the age of 92. According to reports by Hindustan Times (HT), she had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital after suffering from heart- and breathing-related complications. Sources cited by HT revealed that her health had been declining for several months, and she was taken to the hospital in a critical condition before being shifted to the intensive care unit on Saturday night.

A Life Beyond the Spotlight

While her professional achievements placed her among the greatest singers in the country, her personal life was marked by deep challenges. She entered into her first marriage at the age of 16, a relationship that later turned abusive. Despite her success in music, she endured emotional hardships that remained largely away from the public eye.

A Daughter’s Tragic End

One of the most painful chapters in her life was the loss of her daughter, Varsha, in 2012. According to statements shared with IANS by Inspector Pradip Lonandkar, the incident involved a firearm that had earlier gone missing. Authorities confirmed that the weapon was registered in the name of Anand, Asha Bhosle’s youngest son. The singer had reportedly informed the police about the missing firearm prior to the tragedy, leading to the cancellation of her licence.

As detailed in a report by India Today, Varsha had built a career as a freelance journalist. She contributed to publications such as Rediff.com, The Sunday Observer, and Gentleman magazine. She was also artistically inclined, having sung for a few Hindi and Marathi films and occasionally performing alongside her mother at concerts.

Struggles Behind the Scenes

Varsha’s life, however, was marked by long-standing mental health struggles. Reports noted that she had battled depression for years and had previously attempted to take her own life on more than one occasion, including incidents in 2008 and 2010.

Further adding to the family’s grief, Asha Bhosle’s eldest son, Hemant Bhosle, passed away in 2015 after suffering from cancer.
