Asha Bhosle did not enter RD Burman’s room after his death
The passing of legendary singer Asha Bhosle at the age of 92 has once again brought back many personal stories from her life, especially her bond with music composer R. D. Burman. Among those memories, one moment continues to stand out for how deeply emotional it was. It goes back to the day Burman died in 1994, when Asha made a decision that many around her never forgot.

Asha Bhosle and RD Burman were not just collaborators, they were closely connected in life too. By the late 1970s, both had already made their mark in Hindi cinema. While Asha was known for her versatility, Burman was changing the sound of film music with his experiments. Working together brought them closer, and they eventually got married in 1980.

Their journey was not always smooth. The 1980s were a difficult time for Burman professionally as the music industry began shifting. Even when his work was not getting the same attention, Asha continued to support him. People close to them have often said she stood by him in those years without stepping away.

The day everything changed

On January 4, 1994, RD Burman died after suffering two heart attacks. His sudden passing left the industry shocked. But inside the house, it was a very different kind of silence, one filled with grief that was hard to control.

According to an excerpt from Ajitabh Memon’s memoir, published in Movie magazine in February 1994, Asha Bhosle was unable to accept what had happened in those first moments. As people gathered at the house, she refused to enter the bedroom where Burman’s body was kept.

She said, "Main uss kamre mein nahin jaaongi. Main usse mara hua nahin dekh sakti. Main usse zinda dekhna chahti hoon."

Those present described her as completely broken. For her, it was not just about loss, it was about how she wanted to remember him. She did not want the last image in her mind to be of him lying still.

Gulzar and close friends stood by her

Filmmaker and poet Gulzar, who was a close friend and neighbour, was among those who tried to console her. He reportedly held her and tried to calm her down as she cried.

Several members of the film industry came to pay their respects that day. Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan were also present. It was reported that Jaya recited verses from the Bhagavad Gita for the departed soul, adding to the quiet, heavy atmosphere in the house.
