'As you can see, this eye is not blinking.' Justin Bieber reveals he has facial paralysis due to Ramsay Hunt Syndrome
This syndrome is caused by varicella-zoster virus and begins with a painful rash on the side of the ear.
For the uninitiated, this syndrome is caused by varicella-zoster virus and begins with a painful rash on the side of the ear, or in the mouth or anywhere else on the face. It then results in facial paralysis. If the damage isn't much to the facial nerves people generally recover within a few weeks. However, if the damage is significant, then the recovery may not happen for several months.
In the video, Bieber revealed that this syndrome is the cause he cancelled his shows in Toronto and Washington D.C. The pop star demonstrated in the video that he could barely move one side of his face, calling the ailment "pretty serious."
"As you can see, this eye is not blinking, I can't smile on this side of my face, this nostril will not move," Bieber explained in a video.
"So, there's full paralysis on this side of my face. So for those who are frustrated by my cancellations of the next shows, I'm just physically, obviously, not capable of doing them. This is pretty serious, as you can see."
The singer then added that his body is telling him to slow down and hoped that his fans would understand the situation. While the 28-year-old 'Baby' hit-maker wasn't sure how long he would take to heal, Bieber appeared to be positive of making a full recovery in the video.
In March, Biebers' wife, Hailey Bieber, was hospitalized for a blood clot to her brain.
