Artist Syed Haider Raza's paintings to go under the hammer in Delhi next week

Auction house Christie’s will host the Asian Art Week in New York next month. And an important feature of the week will be the South Asian modern + contemporary art auction on September 14. Ten marquee lots to go under the gavel at this auction will be exhibited in the capital next week.

These include the highlights of the auction: seminal works by V S Gaitonde and Syed Haider Raza. Gaitonde’s 1970 painting also adorns the cover of the catalogue. The artist’s paintings have set records at auctions by Christie’s in the past.At the higher end of the estimate, the work is expected to fetch $2.2 million (Rs 14.5 crore).

Raza’s work on display, titled ‘L’Orage’ was also painted in the 70s. The work is estimated to fetch about $1-1.5 million (Rs 10 crore at the higher end). Of course, the actual price realised could be much higher owing to the artist’s recent death.
