In this era of increasing public ire against the prevalence of ‘Fake News’, a certain premier non-religious event may become an unwitting and unwarranted casualty: April Fool’s Day.

Time was when news of the outrageous variety — such as the BBC clip of a “spaghetti harvest” in Switzerland on April 1, 1957 — would evoke guffaws, after the initial embarrassment at being pranked.

Today, it would be viewed with serious concern, not only because of its potential to mislead consumers but also the implicit insult to hardworking farming communities round the world.
