In 1893, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle killed off his famous character — the detective Sherlock Holmes. Doyle wanted to work on his other novels.

His readers, many of whom believed Holmes was real and 221B Baker Street an actual address, raised a hue and cry.

Ten years later, Doyle gave in to the readers’ demand. Doyle rarely struggled to come up with plots for Holmes. But ten years is a long gap.
