Apple unveils new iMac with retina display, Mac Mini

NEW DELHI: Unveiling its new iMac, Apple on Thursday introduced the latest device which boasts of a retina display. The new iMac has a 27-inch display (5210 x 2880 pixels).

"There has never been a desktop display like this. It is the world's highest-resolution display," Phil Schiller said. "We call it the Retina 5K display," he said.

The iMac, which is 5mm thin at the edge uses 30% less energy, claims Apple. It runs on a 3.5GHz Intel i5, which can be upgraded to 4GHz i7. Other specifications include; Radeon R9 graphics, Thunderbolt 2, 1TB fusion drive.

The device, which begins shipping today, s priced at $2499. It comes with the standard 8GB RAM.

Along with the new iMac, also showcased the Mac Mini at a starting price of $499. The device will start shipping from today. Specifications include; 4th generation Intel core processors, Intel Iris and HD graphics 500, PCIe-based flash storage, 802.11 ac Wi-Fi, two Thunderbolt 2 ports.

Apple also launched a new operating software for its Mac series, the OS X Yosemite, which the tech giant said would be available with immediate effect. Apple had initially unveiled the OS X Yosemite in June this year. Like most OS updates from Apple, the Yosemite is also free.

The new OS X Yosemite comes equipped with updated Messages, iTunes and iWork. Users be able to search for content on the computer and on the Internet at once, similar to a feature available with Microsoft's Windows 8. According to Apple, users will now be able to AirPlay to an Apple TV without connecting to a Wi-Fi network.

Apple unveiled the latest iterations of its tablets, the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3. The iPad 2 Air, which is 6.1mm thick will for the first time be available in golden finish colour. The iPad Air 2 also has a TouchID, similar to that in the newer iPhones.

The iPad Air 2 starts at $499 and goes on to $699 with the 16GB version costing $499, 64GB version costing $599 and 128GB one costing $699. Other features in the iPad Air 2 include ultrafast wireless and improved retina display.

The iPad Mini 3 will retail at a starting price of $399. The lineup now reads iPad Mini, iPad Mini 2, iPad Mini 3, iPad Air and iPad Air 2. The pre-orders will begin from October 17.
