Apple’s new iPad mini gets bigger OLED display

Apple has unveiled a new iPad mini with a larger 8.5-inch OLED display, A20 Pro chip and IP67 water and dust resistance. The tablet is now 5.4mm thin and comes in midnight and starlight finishes. Pre-orders open on October 28, with sales beginning November 6.

Price and availability

The new iPad mini starts at Rs 82,900 for the Wi-Fi model and Rs 1,00,900 for Wi-Fi + Cellular. It comes in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage options. Education pricing starts at Rs 76,900.

The TechWoven Smart Folio costs Rs 8,500. The tablet also supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), priced at Rs 11,900 and Rs 7,900, respectively.

Larger OLED display, thinner design

The 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display fits within the same footprint as the previous model, thanks to 24 percent thinner bezels. It offers up to 1,200 nits of peak brightness, 600 nits of full-screen brightness and a new nano-texture option to reduce glare.

The thinner design also adds IP67 protection against water and dust. Apple’s new Acoustic Display uses woofers paired through the screen and tweeters hidden between the glass and aluminium enclosure to improve bass, volume and clarity.

A20 Pro and connectivity upgrades

The A20 Pro chip uses a 2nm process and features a 6-core CPU and 7-core GPU. Apple claims up to 60 percent faster multithreaded CPU performance, 2.7 times faster graphics and 4.5 times faster AI performance over the previous generation. The 512GB variant also gets a Dual 16-core Neural Engine.

Apple’s N1 wireless chip brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread support. Cellular models use the C2 modem, which Apple says delivers up to 50 percent faster cellular data speeds. Fast charging is also supported.

Cameras and iPadOS 27

The 12MP Center Stage front camera moves to the landscape edge for video calls. At the back is a 12MP camera with 4K recording at up to 60fps and an Adaptive True Tone flash.

The tablet runs iPadOS 27 with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, rolling out in beta. Features include personal context understanding, onscreen awareness, updated photo editing tools and web page monitoring in Safari. Extended display support is scheduled to arrive with iPadOS 27.2.
