Apple launches new iMac with M6 in India, prices start at Rs 1,74,900

Apple has announced the new 24-inch iMac with its M6 chip, bringing improved performance, faster connectivity and a greater focus on on-device AI. The all-in-one desktop retains its slim design and is available in seven colours: blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange and silver.

The iMac with M6 starts at Rs 1,74,900 in India. Pre-orders begin on October 28, with availability starting November 6.

Price and availability

The new iMac is available in two processor configurations:

• 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU: Rs 1,74,900; Rs 1,68,900 with education savings.
• 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU: Rs 1,99,900; Rs 1,87,900 with education savings.

Customers can pre-order the desktop through Apple’s online store and the Apple Store app from October 28. It will be available through Apple Stores and authorised resellers from November 6.

M6 performance and AI

The new iMac comes with up to a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, both with two more cores than the previous generation. Apple says the chip is designed to handle everyday multitasking as well as more demanding tasks such as photo and video editing.

Compared with the M4 iMac, Apple claims up to twice the performance in photo editing in Affinity and up to 1.5 times faster performance in apps such as Microsoft Excel. For users upgrading from the most popular Intel-based iMac, the company claims performance gains of up to 18 times, depending on the task.

The M6 also features Neural Accelerators in each GPU core and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple claims up to five times faster on-device AI prompt processing in LM Studio compared with the M4 iMac. This could help users who want to run compatible AI models locally.

Display, camera and audio

The iMac retains its 24-inch 4.5K Retina display, with 500 nits of brightness and support for P3 wide colour. Its all-in-one design houses the computer behind the display, keeping the desktop setup relatively compact.

For video calls, there is a 12MP Center Stage camera that can keep users in frame as they move. Desk View lets users share a top-down view of their workspace during a call.

The desktop also features a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos support, along with a three-microphone array.

Faster connectivity and storage

The new iMac supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, while 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet is available for faster wired connectivity. Apple also claims up to twice the SSD read and write performance compared with the previous generation, which could help when opening large photo libraries and video projects.

Depending on the configuration, the iMac offers up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports and supports up to two external 6K displays.

Apple also offers colour-matched accessories, including a Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad with USB-C charging. A Magic Keyboard with Touch ID is available for unlocking the iMac and authorising supported purchases.

macOS 27 and Siri AI

The new iMac runs macOS 27 Golden Gate, which brings Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features across apps. Apple says users can ask Siri to find information across messages, emails and photos, answer questions and perform tasks across apps.

Visual Intelligence also lets users ask Siri about content on their screen using a keyboard shortcut. Other features include tools to organise Safari tabs, create Shortcuts automations using a description and edit photos.

With Continuity, iMac users can also share files and photos with an iPhone, hand off tasks and control their iPhone from the desktop.
