Apple has introduced its first foldable iPhone, marking the company’s entry into the foldable smartphone segment. Called the iPhone Duo, the device features a book-style folding design, combining a conventional cover display with a larger screen that opens up to provide a tablet-like viewing experience.

The iPhone Duo features a 7.8-inch flexible AMOLED display when unfolded, alongside a 5.5-inch cover display. The device is powered by Apple’s latest A20 Pro chip and comes with 12GB of RAM and a dual-camera system at the rear.

iPhone Duo gets 7.8-inch flexible AMOLED display

The iPhone Duo features a 5.5-inch cover display and a larger 7.8-inch main display when unfolded. Both panels use flexible AMOLED technology with an on-cell design and support a 120Hz refresh rate with LTPO technology.

The larger inner display gives the foldable iPhone a tablet-like viewing area when opened, making it suitable for watching videos, browsing, multitasking and other activities that benefit from a larger screen.

The 5.5-inch outer display allows users to interact with the phone without unfolding it, offering a more conventional smartphone experience.

Both displays support LTPO technology, which can dynamically adjust the refresh rate to help balance smooth visuals with power efficiency.

Unlike Apple’s existing iPhone Pro models, the iPhone Duo uses capacitive fingerprint recognition for biometric authentication instead of Face ID.

A20 Pro chip

The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip, built using a 2nm architecture. The processor is paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM.

The memory configuration puts the foldable alongside Apple’s Pro models in terms of RAM capacity, while the A20 Pro is designed to provide the performance needed for the device’s larger display and foldable form factor.

Storage starts at 256GB, with higher-capacity options including 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.

Dual 48MP rear cameras

For cameras, the iPhone Duo features a dual-camera system on the rear. It comprises a 48MP primary wide camera and a 48MP ultra-wide camera.

The camera setup differs from Apple’s Pro models, which feature a dedicated periscope telephoto lens. The iPhone Duo does not include a separate periscope telephoto camera.

Apple’s entry into foldable smartphones

The iPhone Duo marks a major expansion of Apple’s smartphone portfolio, bringing the company into a category that has already been established by competing smartphone makers.

With its book-style design, the device offers two distinct form factors. The 5.5-inch cover display can be used when the phone is folded, while the 7.8-inch inner display provides a significantly larger viewing area when the device is opened.

The combination of a 7.8-inch flexible AMOLED display, A20 Pro chip, 12GB RAM and up to 2TB of storage positions the iPhone Duo as Apple’s premium entry into the foldable smartphone market.
