Apple Car, built by Porsche that debuted for 24-hour race at 1980 Le Mans, up for grabs at $10 mn

Apple fanboys looking for a new set of wheels once shelter-at-home guidelines are relaxed have reason to cheer. According to Apple Insider, there is a replica of a Porsche 953 K3 Apple-themed race car from 1979 that exists, and is up for grabs if one has $10 million to spare.

Apple sponsored Porsche during the 1980 season of Le Mans. The car bears Apple's initial retro rainbow logo along with the words "Apple Computer." A sticker on its rear bumper reads: "Don't upset the Apple Car."

The replica race car is listed for sale on DuPont Registry is owned by Adam Corolla, and 9tp5Mac places its worth in the ballpark of $10 million.


The Apple Car graced the race track only for one year. They finished second at Riverside and Sears Point, seventh at Sebring, and third at Road America, in addition to a string of races in which the cars failed to cross the finish line.

However, the Apple 935K3 was a fan favourite on the Le Mans circuit despite retiring after only 13 hours in the 24-hour race. The Porsche-Apple partnership, which was forged when the latter was in its infancy, helped get word around that a new player was in the PC market. Hitching the Apple logo on Porsche race cars yielded rich dividends.

A few months after the last race, when Apple went public on December 12, 1980, it became the most profitable initial public offering (IPO) since Ford was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Apple's current plans at making a foray into the mobility space have stalled.

The company dismissed nearly 200 employees from its autonomous vehicle division, Project Titan. Apple is reportedly ditching its plan to engineer a full-fledged car, opting instead to build autonomous vehicle tech. Project Titan was the recipient of three patents in the recent past, putting it in competition with Uber and Waymo, a Google subsidiary.
