Metabolism is key for longevity says Apollo doc
A well-functioning metabolism does far more than aid digestion or manage daily energy levels. It quietly determines how well the body resists disease and how long it remains resilient. Highlighting this connection, Dr Sudhir Kumar of Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad, recently explained how metabolic health directly shapes longevity and guards against life-threatening conditions affecting the heart and brain.

Why Metabolic Health Matters

Conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and excess body fat often coexist. These issues are not isolated problems but shared triggers behind heart attacks and strokes. However, Dr Kumar points out that the way these risks are usually evaluated may fail to capture the full picture, delaying timely intervention.

Blood Pressure Needs Context

Relying on a single blood pressure reading taken at a clinic can be deceptive. Stress, anxiety, and lack of rest can temporarily elevate numbers. Regular monitoring at home provides a more accurate reflection, especially when hospital readings appear unusually high.

Detecting Sugar Problems Early

Waiting until diabetes is formally diagnosed can mean missing a critical window for prevention. Insulin resistance develops much earlier and serves as an initial alarm. Simple tests such as fasting insulin levels and HOMA-IR can identify this stage, when lifestyle adjustments are most effective.

Looking Beyond Basic Cholesterol

Standard LDL cholesterol values do not always reveal true cardiovascular danger. A more reliable indicator is ApoB, which measures all harmful cholesterol particles and offers deeper insight into heart disease risk.

Rethinking Obesity Measurements

Body weight and BMI often oversimplify the issue of fat distribution. Fat stored around the abdomen and internal organs poses greater danger. Measurements like waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio provide stronger predictive value. Advanced scans such as DEXA or MRI can be used when precision is required.

Sleep as a Protective Tool

Sleep is frequently neglected despite its powerful influence on metabolic balance. Consistent, high-quality sleep lasting seven to nine hours each night significantly lowers cardiovascular risk.

Movement Beyond Assumptions

Prolonged sitting is itself a health hazard. Both endurance-based activities and muscle-strengthening exercises should be consciously evaluated and incorporated, rather than presumed adequate.

The Bigger Picture

Identifying risks early, using more meaningful markers, and correcting lifestyle habits can dramatically reduce heart attacks and strokes, paving the way for a longer, healthier life.
