Anupam Mittal recently weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding Ranveer Allahbadia. The Shark Tank India judge acknowledged that the YouTuber’s statements about Indian parents were inappropriate and misguided. However, he shifted much of the responsibility onto digital platforms like YouTube, criticizing them for amplifying such provocative content.

Sharing his perspective on LinkedIn, the Shaadi.com founder described the remarks made on Samay Raina’s podcast India’s Got Latent as “messy, crass, and undeniably wrong." Still, he urged people to look past the outrage and address the deeper issue. “Before we adopt a moral high ground and jump to conclusions, let’s take a step back and examine the real problem,” he wrote.

Mittal clarified that the show was never intended to be a socially responsible program like Satyamev Jayate. Instead, its appeal lay in its irreverent humor, shock value, and controversial discussions.

"Like it or hate it, that was the show," he said, adding that social media thrive on escalating extremes. "When one extreme becomes the norm, what does the algorithm do? Promotes the next level of obscenity."

Mittal did not hold back from criticizing platforms such as YouTube and Instagram. "These platforms dangle virality like Prasad; watch creators chase it, and then step back when the fire starts," he stated.

He acknowledged that both Allahbadia and Mukhija had made serious missteps and issued apologies but questioned why more scrutiny wasn’t placed on the platforms enabling such content.

"Are our laws actually protecting young minds from explicit content? Why aren’t we holding platforms accountable for what they serve up? How is it that kids can still access far worse content with zero guardrails?" Mittal said.

Mittal also shared a personal anecdote about encountering inappropriate recommendations for his child on YouTube, despite having parental controls enabled. "YouTube is the worst of all offenders. For example, although I have parental controls set up for my 7-year-old, I am shocked at the age-inappropriate content that it keeps serving up."

Calling social media giants the “true culprits,” he argued that traditional media would never be allowed to operate with such unchecked freedom. "Imagine a newspaper or a TV channel publishing the type of content that these platforms carry with total impunity," he said. "It would lead to a mutiny." he pointed out.

Currently, three FIRs have been lodged against Allahbadia in Mumbai, Assam, and Jaipur.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court granted him temporary protection from arrest but issued a sharp rebuke while reviewing his request to consolidate the FIRs. “If this does not qualify as obscene, then what does? Do you believe you can display vulgarity at will and normalize depravity?” Justice Surya Kant questioned.

Mittal’s post ignited a debate in the comments section, with users divided over whether the backlash should be aimed at individual content creators or at social media platforms that profit from controversy.
