After 1 yr as FTII boss, Anupam Kher quits; cites commitment to 'international TV shows'

The actor also posted a copy of the resignation letter addressed to the I&B minister.

Anupam Kher was selected at the Chairperson of the Film and Television Institute of India on October 11 last year.
Anupam Kher on Wednesday resigned as the Film and Television Institute of India chairman. In a message posted on Twitter, he cited "commitment to international TV shows" as the reason propelling his decision.

Tweeting about it, he wrote that it was "an honour, a privilege & a great learning experience to be the Chairman of the prestigious . But because of my international assignments I won’t have much time to devote at the institute. Hence decided to send my resignation. Thank you."

The 63-year-old actor also posted a copy of the resignation letter that he had addressed to the Information & Broadcasting Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore.

In the letter, he said that he will be stationed in the US for "nearly nine months between 2018 and 2019 and then for a similar period for a minimum of three years more".

Adding, "Given this assignment it would not be fair to me, the students and management team, for me to hold a position of such responsibility and accountability, without being actively involved in the operations."

He went on to thank the staff, teachers & students of FTII for their 'support & appreciation' during his tenure as chairman.


Kher is currently shooting for his upcoming American TV show 'New Amsterdam'. The actor will portray the role of a neurosurgeon in the series that also stars Ryan Eggold, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims and Tyler Labine. The shooting for the show is taking place in New York.

On the home front, he will be seen in 'The Accidental Prime Minister', based on Sanjay Baru's 2014 book . The film revolves around Manmohan Singh's term as the PM and on Baru's take on the events that took place during that time.

The actor was appointed the Chairperson of the Film and Television Institute of India on October 11 last year. He succeeded Gajendra Chauhan, who had a controversial tenure since 2014 as the head of the Pune-based institute.
