Ankur Warikoo shares how changing careers eight times taught him that past experience can shape the future without limiting new possibilities.
Ankur Warikoo’s career advice for those considering a switch
Ankur Warikoo took to social media and asked, “Is it too late to completely change my career after 4-5 years of experience?” He pointed out that many people think about making a career change as they grow professionally but ultimately decide against it. Thoughts such as “I am too old for this” or not having “the luxury of having options anymore” can make people hesitate.According to Warikoo, however, the number of years already spent in a career should not become the reason to remain stuck.
Why 4 or 5 years should not stop you from changing careers
Warikoo explained his point using a simple Rs 100 example. If someone has Rs 100 and loses Rs 10, would they spend the remaining Rs 90 trying to recover the money already lost? He suggested that most people would not. Applying the same logic to careers, Warikoo asked why someone should worry about spending 4 or 5 years on a career change if they still have around 40 years of working life ahead. His argument is straightforward: time already spent should not force someone to spend even more time doing something they no longer want to pursue.

Warikoo also used his own career journey to explain why starting over does not necessarily mean losing everything built previously. He said he had “restarted life” multiple times during two decades of his career. At 23, Warikoo was training to become a scientist. A year later, at 24, he began working as a designer of training material. At 26, he moved into management consulting before becoming an entrepreneur at 29. At 31, he took up a role at an MNC. His career then changed direction again. At 35, he returned to a startup, became a content creator at 39 and started another venture at 42.‘Your past only shapes your future’
Looking at these career moves today, Warikoo acknowledged that they might appear to be “wild decisions.” However, he believes every one of those choices contributed to the person he eventually became. His message is particularly relevant for professionals who feel trapped by the experience they have already accumulated. A career switch does not necessarily erase what came before it. Previous roles, skills and experiences can continue to influence what comes next.Warikoo summed up his perspective by saying that “your past only shapes your future” and does not deny you the opportunity to create it. His own journey suggests that a career does not have to follow a single straight path. For someone considering a change, the bigger question may not be how much time has already been spent, but how much time remains to build something different.
