NEW DELHI: Mylabs Discovery Solutions that received a commercial approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation on Monday for its COVID-19 test kit is in news again. But, this time, it is for one of their virologists - Minal Dakhave Bhosale - who was heading the team that was working on coronavirus testing kit called 'Mylab PathoDetect COVID-19 Qualitative PCR kit'.
On Saturday, BCC featured a story, titled 'Coronavirus: The woman behind India's first testing kit', on the research and development chief of the Pune-based company.
The story spoke about how Bhosale fought a professional and personal deadline of delivering the functional kits on time along with pregnancy emergencies and due date approaching closer. A day before delivering her baby girl, she submitted her kits to the state-run National Institute of Virology (NIV) for evaluation.
Her brave story stole hearts of the India Inc bosses.
Anand Mahindra lauded Bhosale's efforts. Quoting the news of the virologist, the Mahindra Group Chairman wrote, "You also delivered a ray of hope to the country".

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairperson and MD of Biocon, also praised the woman behind India's first testing kit. In her tweet, she wrote, Bhosale 'makes us all so proud to see women leading the way.

In a reply to her tweet, Mylabs wrote, "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. For all women here, you have been that inspiration!" Later, the molecular diagnostic company thanked the biotech entrepreneur for being an inspiration to all women and men at the firm.

In what may go down as an important solution in India's fight against coronavirus, the biotech company on Tuesday created an indigenous solution to test patients for COVID-19 that can halve the time taken for results. It was able to shorten the test time to 2.5 hours with the PathoDetect as against the prevalent 6-8 hours because its team has created a solution that does both the screening and confirmation jobs simultaneously.
According to PTI's news report, Mylab's team of 25 scientists started working on the solution six weeks ago, fearing that the crisis may eventually hit India.
The test for COVID-19 will also pick up positive cases among asymptomatic patients. The company that started off as a trading firm in 2012 and diversified into research in 2016 can manufacture over 15,000 testing kits per day from its facility at Lonavala and the same will be ramped up to 25,000 kits per day, its co-founder Shrikant Patole told PTI.

(Image: LinkedIn) Patole had explained that till now, India has been using kits prepared by NIV, also based in Pune, but it was the fears over the increase in numbers which made private sector interventions in manufacturing necessary. The testing kits done by NIV cost up to Rs 4,500 per sample if both screening and confirmation are included. "Mylabs is confident of selling the kits at a fourth of that cost," he added. The company is looking to rope in investors.

Amitabh Kant, CEO of Niti Aayog, had also congratulated the Pune firm for the 'brilliant work' of developing a low-cost kit to detect COVID-19.

Google chief Sundar Pichai has donated Rs 5 crore to Give India, matching Google's earlier donation to the non-profit organisation for the coronavirus pandemic.
"Thank you @sundarpichai for matching @Googleorg's Rs 5 crore grant to provide desperately needed cash assistance for vulnerable daily wage worker families...," Give India said in a tweet.
Previously, Google had announced an over USD 800 million commitment towards efforts to tackle Covid-19 pandemic that claimed thousands of lives globally. This includes a USD 200 million investment fund for NGOs and banks to help small businesses access capital.
Besides, Google has also teamed up with Apple to work on a contact tracing approach designed with strong controls and protections for user privacy.

Hyundai Motor India on Monday said it has donated Rs 7 crore to the PM CARES Fund to fight the Covid-19 crisis.
"Our contribution to the PM CARES Fund stands testament to solidarity we hold with the people of India, amidst this crisis," Hyundai Motor India MD and CEO SS Kim said in a statement.
In challenging times such as these, the company will continue giving back to help India defeat this adversity, he added.

Home grown Dabur group, on Tuesday, pledged Rs 21 crore to support the relief efforts and help the immediate needs of people affected from the Covid-19 pandemic.
The group will also provide assistance to people engaged in frontline efforts to fight the virus and support to members of vulnerable sections of the society and migrant workers, who are the hardest hit by this pandemic.
"We have earmarked a fund of Rs 21 crore towards relief efforts... Out of this pledged amount, a sum of Rs 11 crore is being contributed to PM CARES Fund by Dabur India and other entities in the Group," said Dabur India Ltd Chairman Amit Burman said.

Indian software major Infosys, too, joined the Covid-19 fight with a Rs 100 crore donation. The Infosys Foundation has contributed half of this amount to the PM CARES Fund to expand hospital capacity for treatment and enable hospital stays for poor Covid-19 patients.
