Anand Mahindra recently recommended followers to visit Siliguri
For travellers hoping to embrace the charm of the rainy season, billionaire industrialist Anand Mahindra has highlighted an unforgettable railway journey that captures the beauty of India's monsoon landscapes. Sharing his recommendation on X, he encouraged travel lovers to experience the celebrated Rain Train, a heritage ride that passes through the breathtaking surroundings of Siliguri, a city renowned for its lush greenery and its proximity to the Himalayan foothills.

Mahindra described the journey as an enchanting escape into a landscape that resembles the pages of a beautifully illustrated storybook. The Rain Train is the popular name given to the unforgettable monsoon ride on the UNESCO-recognised Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, affectionately known as the Toy Train. During the rainy season, the narrow-gauge railway winds through mist-covered hills, dense forests, and rain-drenched valleys, creating an atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and magical.

One of the most sought-after sections of this heritage route begins at Sukna, located around 10 kilometres from Siliguri, before climbing towards the picturesque settlement of Tindharia. Visitors can board the heritage locomotive or the specially operated Jungle Safari service from Sukna Railway Station, which can be reached within approximately 20 to 30 minutes by road from the heart of Siliguri.

As the vintage train moves at a leisurely pace, passengers are treated to spectacular views of the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. The route passes through thick tropical forests, where towering trees, rolling hills, drifting clouds, and seasonal rainfall combine to create a mesmerizing natural spectacle. The slow speed of the train allows travellers to fully appreciate the serene surroundings while soaking in the cool mountain air and the soothing sounds of the monsoon.

The ideal period to enjoy this remarkable experience is between July and September, when the rains transform the forests into vibrant shades of green and waterfalls flow at their fullest. Situated on the banks of the Mahananda River at the base of the Himalayas, Siliguri is an important Tier-II city in West Bengal. Spread across the Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts, it is widely recognised as the Gateway to Northeast India and serves as a major starting point for visitors heading towards the hills, forests, and neighbouring northeastern states.
