India’s first Water Metro project in Kochi continues to earn admiration from public figures and international visitors alike. Business magnate Anand Mahindra had earlier praised the initiative, calling Kochi a “must-see” city for its unique and sustainable public transport system. Now, a popular travel vlogger from New Zealand, Hugh Abroad, has added to the growing chorus of appreciation after personally experiencing the Water Metro.

Recently, travel influencer Hugh Abroad posted a video on his social media channels after riding the Kochi Water Metro. Starting from the High Court terminal, he narrated his experience from ticket purchase to disembarkation. “Okay here we go… Water Metro tickets over here. High Court return please. One way. Perfect. Thank you sir,” he said as he began the journey.

The modern design of the boat left a strong impression. “Wow. Very modern boat. It is ice cold in here which is really good,” he remarked. He also pointed out amenities like USB ports and clean interiors. “Very very clean. Literally spotless in there,” he added.


As the journey progressed through scenic waterfronts lined with hotels and green views, Hugh summed it up by saying, “Fantastic. 10 out of 10 experience. Look how modern that is. Bang on time.”

Public Reactions and Civic Pride

The Kochi Water Metro sparked wide engagement online, drawing a mix of admiration and curiosity from users across platforms. Many appreciated the system’s cleanliness and how well-maintained the infrastructure appears, especially compared to common issues seen in other cities. While some acknowledged that not every part of Kerala may be spotless, there was a strong sense of collective pride in efforts being made to improve public spaces and maintain efficiency.

People from different regions praised Kerala for setting a high standard, with several calling it a place the rest of India should look up to. Others expressed joy in hearing international visitors speak positively about the state, seeing it as a proud moment for locals. Some welcomed global attention warmly, while a few comments, including from neighboring countries, expressed surprise and admiration for such an initiative in India.

There were also critical voices pointing out aspects like pricing, and some questioned why similar systems aren’t being implemented in larger cities like Mumbai. A few users were unfamiliar with the term "Water Metro," viewing it simply as a modernized boat service. Still, many appreciated the fact that it’s a government-led initiative and highlighted its uniqueness in the Indian context.

Anand Mahindra’s Praise for Kochi’s Innovation

In December, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra shared a video of the Kochi Water Metro and praised its design and purpose. He wrote, “Great job, Kochi,” while noting that the city’s layout, shaped by its intricate waterways, makes it an ideal location for such a service.

He called the project a model of “sustainable and inclusive transportation,” highlighting its electric-powered boats, scenic routes, and eco-friendly approach. Mahindra also appreciated the name “Water Metro” as being relatable and intuitive for both locals and tourists.

A One-of-a-Kind System in India

Kochi in Kerala has made history by becoming the first city in India to launch a Water Metro system. The project officially began with the introduction of its first electric boat, 'Muziris', in December 2021. Manufactured by Cochin Shipyard Limited, this is one of 23 eco-friendly, battery-powered boats designed to operate as part of the innovative transport network.

Known as Kerala’s commercial hub and one of the state's most densely populated districts, Kochi faces heavy traffic and growing urban congestion. The Water Metro aims to ease this burden by providing a sustainable and efficient alternative to road transport. It is expected to significantly cut down on vehicular pollution while offering faster and more direct access to key business and commercial areas on the mainland.

The project features an ambitious plan to develop 15 water routes connecting 10 islands across a 78-kilometer stretch. Once completed, it will operate with a fleet of 78 electric-hybrid ferries serving 38 jetties, making commuting smoother for thousands of residents who live along the lakeshore. By integrating green technology with urban planning, Kochi’s Water Metro is poised to become a model for other coastal cities across India.
