Amul honours Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and his santoor with a monochrome creative

The santoor maestro passed away at 83 following a heart attack.

A sudden heart attack took one of India's most well-known classical musicians away on Tuesday morning. To honour the santoor maestro, dairy brand Amul shared a special creative on social media to honour Pandit Shivkumar Sharma.

Sharma, who took the stringed instrument to the global stage and successfully straddled the worlds of classical and film music, passed away at 83 following a heart attack. He died at his Pali Hill residence in Mumbai. While he was active and was due to perform in Bhopal next week, the musician was also suffering from renal ailments.

On Tuesday night, Amul shared a creative topical, in honour of the music legend. The caption of the post read, "Tribute to the legendary maestro santoor player…"



In the post, the dairy giant said that Sharma's every breath was melodious. "Unke hars saans mein saaz tha."

The post was retweeted over 40 times and was liked by more than 261 people.

Before this, Amul had shared tributes for late singers Lata Mangeshkar and Bappi Lahiri, and Bajaj Group Chairman Emeritus Rahul Bajaj.

Amul is known for its special take on current affairs from around the world - from celebrity weddings, sports, business, and politics to blockbuster movies - with its creative doodles.

Sharma, one half of the famous 'Shiv-Hari' composer duo along with flautist Hari Prasad Chaurasia, is survived by his wife Manorama and sons Rahul, also a santoor player, and Rohit. The Shiv-Hari duo composed music for an array of films such as 'Silsila', 'Lamhe', 'Chandni' and 'Darr'.

A Padma Vibhushan recipient, Sharma was born in Jammu in 1938 and is believed to be the first musician to have played Indian classical music on the santoor, a folk instrument from Jammu and Kashmir.

Sharma received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986, followed by the Padma Shri in 1991, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001.
