When in Mumbai, don’t wear one, advises Amrish Kumar, CEO, Ritu Kumar. He has other tips up his sleeve.
The essentials “For a business-oriented wardrobe, I’d say a classic suit (blue /grey), a pair of well-fitted jeans, a shirt (pink, white, light blue), a black T-shirt and a great pair of shoes. You don’t skimp on the shoes. You need a pair of well-designed, brown leather shoes that can go with trousers or jeans. For me, it’s a pair of classic leather boots.”
On the wrist “Not all people do, but I like a classic, vintage watch. I’m not the gold Rolex type. The more weathered a watch is, the more I like it. Once during a trip to Africa, I got a really cool Masai leather bracelet, which isn’t something you can really wear to work.”
Business as usual “Dressing for a business dinner is fairly easy — a single-breasted, well-fitted blazer, a pair of slacks, shirt or a full-sleeved T-shirt (if you can get away with it). However, the important thing to remember is the trousers. The trousers must be well-tailored, well-shaped. They can’t be too tight or too baggy. Most times, baggy trousers don’t work.”

Weekend away “A soft T-shirt, a pair of cargos, Onitsuka trainers, a good pair of jeans, a lightweight jacket. It also depends on where you’re going to. For an outdoors weekend trip, I’d take an outback cowboy hat, which you can’t really wear if you’re going to Mumbai. You’ll end up looking like a lemon.”
Out on the town “When going clubbing, comfort is very important. I’d suggest a soft, light, full-sleeve tee, leather jacket, jeans and boots.”

One trend to avoid “I’m not a big fan of shiny things — be it logos or colours — and loud prints. You can wear prints but they don’t have to be loud.”
