Amid Oracle layoffs, corporate recruiter's message: 'Good work would not protect you. The real job security is...'

Thousands of jobs are impacted by recent tech layoffs. Companies are investing heavily in AI, leading to workforce adjustments. Experts state that performance and loyalty do not guarantee job security. Budget decisions are made behind closed doors.

Many tech companies, including Oracle, have recently cut thousands of jobs as they ramp up spending on AI.
The latest wave of layoffs at Oracle that could impact thousands of jobs is not just another corporate restructuring headline. It is a test of the belief that many professionals quietly hold onto - that consistent hard work will keep their jobs safe, says a corporate recruiter who has worked with many tech companies like Uber, Microsoft and Uber.

As Oracle moves to cut roles while ramping up spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure, the shift reflects a broader transformation across the tech industry. Companies are pouring billions into AI capabilities, data centers, and long-term innovation strategies. These investments are critical for staying competitive against larger cloud rivals like Amazon, but they come at a cost.

With around 162,000 employees globally as of mid-2025, Oracle is navigating a complex balance between growth and AI buildout.

"Oracle is huge. The kind of company where people plan to stay for years. But none of that mattered. I've been watching this pattern for months now. Amazon laid people off. Meta did it. Google, Microsoft, and now Oracle. Big companies that everyone thinks are stable. And thousands of people are getting let go overnight, " says the corporate recruiter Shreya Mehta in a LinkedIn post.

Most people caught in layoffs never saw it coming and they believed their good work and loyalty would protect them, she said. Shreya Mehta, who is now the co-founder of recruitment firm Super Coach, said that your performance, tenure, or recent promotion doesn’t make you immune and companies make budget decisions in rooms you’ll never see.

"Even if you're doing great work. Even if you just got a promotion. Even if the company seems solid. Layoffs are budget decisions made in rooms you'll never be in," she said.

Her advice: Nurture your network. Understand your market value. Ask yourself: if my job disappeared tomorrow, could I land a new one within 60 days? If the answer is no, that’s where you need to act.

The only real protection is being skilled, adaptable, and respected enough to thrive anywhere—not just where you work today, she said. "The only real security is being good enough to land anywhere. Not just where you are now. Anywhere, " she said.
