Neil Young announced that he is offering free access to his entire music catalogue to residents of Greenland, Denmark’s semi-autonomous territory.
Tensions flared earlier this month after US President Donald Trump threatened to seize Greenland and impose tariffs on European nations such as France, Germany and Britain if they opposed him. Amid this, the American-Canadian singer-songwriter, Neil Young, is giving the people of Greenland the gift of song — his songs.

At a time when global politics is spilling into everyday life, Neil Young has chosen music as his response. The veteran rocker has stepped into the conversation surrounding Greenland’s uncertain political climate with an unexpected but deeply personal gesture. Instead of statements or speeches, Young has turned to his life’s work, offering it freely to those caught in the middle of rising tensions. The move reflects his long-standing belief in music as a form of resistance, comfort, and connection across borders.

Neil Young announced the decision on his personal blog, revealing that he is offering free access to his entire music catalogue to residents of Greenland, Denmark’s semi-autonomous territory. The announcement came as Greenland’s future became a point of tension between the United States and NATO allies. According to AP, Young explained that the gesture was intended to ease the stress and pressure being felt by the people of Greenland amid threats and political uncertainty. He added that he hoped listeners could enjoy his music and music films in their homeland, experiencing them in the highest possible quality.

The offer is valid for one year, with the possibility of renewal. To avail of it, applicants must have a Greenland-based mobile phone. Young described the initiative as a gesture rooted in peace and love. His manager later confirmed to The Associated Press that the announcement and offer were genuine.

He was also a part-time member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, contributing to their chart-topping 1970 album Déjà Vu.

Donald Trump’s remarks

Trump’s remarks sent shockwaves across Europe and were widely seen as a challenge to the transatlantic alliance. European governments quickly pushed back, rallying in defence of Denmark and its semiautonomous territory. Following the strong response, Trump later retreated from his suggestion of taking Greenland by military force.

The episode highlighted Greenland’s growing strategic importance, given its location between the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean, a region increasingly shaped by geopolitical competition. Speaking on Tuesday, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the territory requires stronger surveillance and security but will not submit to foreign pressure. He emphasised that the government is focused on protecting its people while addressing fears triggered by external threats. Nielsen made the remarks during a joint discussion with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at Sciences Po University in Paris. He added that Greenland recognises the need for enhanced monitoring and defence in the region, particularly in light of Russia’s current actions in the Arctic.
