‘Amazing, and I love it so much’: Euphoria star Hunter Schafer reveals bottom surgery, shares recovery struggle

Hunter Schafer, the Euphoria star, recently spoke about a personal milestone regarding her gender identity. In an interview with ELLE, the actress confirmed that she underwent gender-affirming bottom surgery in December 2025 and described the experience as deeply positive.

“I just had bottom surgery in December, which was amazing, and I love it so much,” the 27-year-old actress told ELLE. Her disclosure reflects into a deeply personal part of her transition and the decisions that helped her feel comfortable with her identity.

Schafer, who rose to international prominence playing Jules Vaughn in HBO's Euphoria, said her decision followed a period of reflection about her relationship with her body and gender identity.


“For a long time I’ve embraced the gender-expansive part of myself, and I really wanted to try to make that previous body work, because I thought there was something really cool and badass about it,” she told ELLE.

However, finally, she found out that a medical transition suited her better. In addition, Schafer also stressed that all transgenders have individual cases; hence her case is not supposed to set a precedent for other cases.

Schafer also provided some insights on the limitations she went through during the recovery period following the surgery. She stated that she spent a lot of time resting and could not do much throughout the day.

“I think my limit was 150 steps per day, which is nothing,” she recalled.

Schafer's career continues to expand beyond her breakthrough role. She is set to appear in Blade Runner 2099, the upcoming Prime Video science-fiction series in which she stars alongside Michelle Yeoh.

What is a “bottom surgery”?

Bottom surgery or gender-affirming genital surgery involves surgical alteration of the individual’s genitals in a way that it matches their gender identity. The type of surgery depends on an individual’s requirements and could include either reconstruction or removal of some genital tissue.

All transgenders do not undergo surgery and the surgery is different for everyone.
