Akbar Padamsee's 89th birthday celebrations sans the cake but not without the Rasmalai

For Akbar Padamsee, 2016 was a landmark year, given that his work was sold for a recordmaking Rs.19 crore. So, one would think that the artist would bring in his 89th birthday with much merriment. Padamsee, however, is a simple man.

The octogenarian spent his birthday last week sans a cake and instead chose to have his favourite sweet — ras malai — to celebrate. While his birthday might have been a mellow affair, the artist has a solo exhibition with 110 of his works lined up for later this year.
