Madhoo (born as Madhoobala) was born into a Tamil family. She is a cousin of actress Hema Malini. She became an instant household name with the 1991 action romance Phool Aur Kaante. The 1992 romantic drama Roja, directed by Mani Ratnam cemented her fame further. In the film, Madhoo won hearts as she stepped into the shoes of Roja, a lively and mischievous village girl, who accidentally gets married off to a boy from the city.
