Agra metro vs San Francisco's BART: US venture capitalist impressed after using Indian transit system
US venture capital professional Niamh O’Donnell praised the cleanliness of the newly opened Agra Metro in India, comparing it favorably to San Francisco’s BART system. Her social media post led to a discussion about differences in age, ridership, ...

Niamh’s post drew reactions from several X users, many pointing out differences in age, usage, and infrastructure between the two systems. A user responded, “It's new. BART is 50 years old.” Another one added context, noting that BART, built in the 1970s, runs at full capacity, whereas the Agra Metro, opened in 2024, still has lower occupancy rates.
Other users pointed out that daily ridership and traffic patterns are quite different. One person commented, “Now compare the daily average commuters and you would understand why a metro in Agra was not a need at all in the first place. You shall give Delhi Metro a try in the peak hours and would understand why the metro comes every 10 mins and not every 2 mins creating a stampede like situation for an hour at least daily.” Another user, made a broader observation, saying, “An average street in India is cleaner compared to BART in San Francisco. Which in turn is cleaner than the average American's mind.”
The reactions also ranged from surprise to appreciation. A person jokingly asked, “There's a metro in Agra, lol?” while another added, “Love to see that. The metro in Agra setting high standards for cleanliness is something to be proud of. Great public transport makes a huge difference in how a city feels.”
Agra Metro: Modern Infrastructure
The Agra Metro, operated by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), currently runs a 6 km stretch from Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar Mandir. It forms part of a larger 29.4 km network spanning two corridors and 27 stations. Corridor 1 connects Sikandra to Taj East Gate, while Corridor 2 will run from Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar. An extension of Corridor 1, adding five new stations, is expected to open soon, following successful trial runs in December 2025. Key stations provide access to major tourist spots like the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort.BART: Decades of Service
By contrast, San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has been in operation since 1972, with its first SF station opening in 1973. It connects San Francisco with the East Bay and the Peninsula, featuring 50 stations across five counties. BART serves as a key commuter route and also connects to San Francisco International Airport and Oakland International Airport. Despite its decades of service, many users continue to compare it unfavorably to newer metros in terms of cleanliness and comfort.Niamh’s Impressions of India
During her trip, Niamh also shared a photo of herself outside the Taj Mahal, describing India as “officially the most underrated country I’ve visited. It’s a country filled with rich culture, beautiful traditions, stellar food, and the warmest people.” Her social media posts included snapshots of Delhi traffic congestion during an AI Summit visit, giving a more complete picture of life in modern Indian cities. The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
