Vidya Sagar Gannamani shares what he does to keep his body, mind and soul healthy.
Vidya Sagar Gannamani, Chairman and Managing Director of Adecco India believes in the overall well-being of the body that includes, mental as well as physical wellness. The key to a healthy body is a healthy and nutritious diet with well-balanced meals.
"I also ensure that I exercise regularly by walking an average of 10,000 steps a day. The only fitness regimen that I follow is walking. Most often, I walk in the late evenings for about 90 minutes and my goal is to complete at least 10,000 steps every day. I believe in a regular, predictable diet. This includes plenty of ingredients that are a good source of vitamins and minerals. I also try and strike a good balance between vegetables, white meats, fruits, and nuts. I prefer low carb intake, as it keeps me active throughout the day. Next to being regular and predictable, I try and practice portion control and enough intake of all the key nutrients that are required for a healthy body," he says.
For his mind to be healthy Gannamani just immerses himself and enjoys everything that he does. "I love to unwind by going for drives with family or friends and cook for them from time to time. Also during the COVID lockdown of 2020, being an engineer at heart, I built a couple of large-scale models with Lego along with my daughter whilst enjoying quality father-daughter time. And yes, I sometimes do binge-watch shows that intrigue me on Netflix," he says.
Apart from the weekly supplements of vitamins and minerals, Gannamani ensures he includes lots of greens and lentils in his diet. "My go-to drink nowadays is ginger tea, with a slice of lemon, a pinch of turmeric, and a touch of honey – all of which are important ingredients in the Indian kitchen and now recognised as “superfoods” in the western world," he says.
Being positive, wilful, and thoroughly enjoying every moment of every day is how Gannamani keeps his soul energetic.

“I decided to use this opportunity to improve my physical conditioning. I started cycling (after more than 40 years) inside my gated community from mid-April. I went from seven kilometres per ride to 20 kilometres by the end of June. Recently, I did a 52-kilometre ride to Chikka Tirupathi [on the outskirts of Bengaluru]. Cycling has had a huge impact, not just on my physical conditioning but also my confidence.”

“Startups are quite demanding, so I’ve never been able to work out more than three days a week, even when I trained for the Ironman Triathlon. So, when the lockdown was announced, I decided to challenge myself with a ‘consistency goal’ of accomplishing a workout a day. It began with coordinated workouts on Zoom with my friends and as restrictions eased, I started going for outdoor runs. There were days when there would be so many calls that I’d be seen climbing the building stairs at 10 pm. I now have more than 100 days of workouts under my belt and it has been the biggest stressbuster.”

“During the lockdown, I have managed to master single-leg burpees. It’s important to have a defined schedule and stick to it. I ensure that I block out some time during the day for exercise. I work out at home daily with various bodyweight exercises — I do pushups, burpees and air squats. I love doing CrossFit and high-intensity interval training that combines weightlifting, aerobics, powerlifting and gymnastics.”
