Delhi-born Sonika Gill carved her own path in Bollywood. She gained recognition for her role in the 1989 blockbuster Ram Lakhan. A trained dancer, Gill spent years in smaller roles before her breakthrough. A serious accident impacted her career....

Sonika Gill’s Bollywood journey
Sonika Gill’s artistic journey began early in Delhi, where she actively participated in school cultural programs and frequently performed on stage alongside her schoolmate, future playback singer Sonu Nigam. After moving to Mumbai, she spent nearly a decade working in smaller roles across several films, including Nazrana Pyar Ka, Prem Geet, Siskiyan, Aaj Ki Awaz, Anokha Insaan, and Main Aur Tum. Her first substantial opportunity arrived with Manoj Kumar’s Clerk in 1989, which became a stepping stone toward larger projects.
Her breakthrough came soon after when filmmaker Subhash Ghai signed her for a three-film contract under Mukta Arts after an impressive first meeting. Despite competition from more established names, Ghai chose Sonika based on her determination and individuality, disregarding damaging rumours about her professionalism. This faith paid off when she appeared as Vivia in Ram Lakhan, a major commercial success that elevated her profile significantly, even in a star-studded cast featuring Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, and Dimple Kapadia.
Sonika Gill’s life now
However, Sonika’s promising trajectory suffered a severe blow in 1992 following a serious car accident that caused a leg fracture and forced her into a lengthy recovery. The injury cost her several significant projects, including a role in Ghai’s Khalnayak, which was later played by Ramya Krishnan. Despite physical challenges, Sonika continued working, adapting her performances in films such as Tirangaa and Ghar Ki Izzat while managing her recovery.
Personal hardships, including family tragedies, eventually prompted Sonika to leave India and relocate to Dubai, where she briefly worked outside the film industry. After returning to India, she resumed acting with projects in films like My Friend Ganesha 3, Akkad Bakkad Bam Be Bo, and television ventures. In her personal life, Sonika married builder Mitesh Rughani later in life. She now has a daughter with her husband, and lives with his first wife and her two stepsons in a blended marriage.
