Ahead of GDN's release, an old video of R. Madhavan has gone viral, where he opens up about his marriage with wife Sarita and shares why he believes getting married young has certain advantages. The actor credits mutual respect as the foundation o...

Madhavan's love story with wife Sarita
Long before he became one of Indian cinema's most loved actors, Madhavan met Sarita Birje in 1991 while working as a public speaking and personality development coach in Kolhapur. Sarita was one of his students and had enrolled to prepare for an air hostess interview. After successfully landing the job, she thanked Madhavan by taking him out for dinner. Their friendship gradually turned into a relationship, and after dating for eight years, the couple got married in 1999, when Madhavan was 28 years old. More than two decades later, they continue to be regarded as one of the industry's most enduring couples.
'Respect is the biggest reason'
During the podcast, Madhavan said that his marriage is not free from disagreements, but he believes what has kept the relationship strong is mutual respect. He shared that Sarita has never looked at him as a film star first but as an equal partner. In return, he makes a conscious effort to remind her how fortunate he feels to have her in his life.According to the actor, treating each other as equals and appreciating one another has been far more important than fame or professional success.
Reason 1: People are more open to change
Explaining why older generations often encouraged early marriage, Madhavan said he no longer believes it was simply because of social conditioning. Instead, he feels younger people are generally more willing to adapt for another person.
He said, "If you get married younger, yeah, your flexibility to change because before your eccentricity set in is far easier because know this, when you get married, you're going to you're going to lose a lot of yourself. You'll have to compromise a lot of your beliefs and your faith and your lifestyle and your way of living and you'll find that it is worth it to keep this person with you."
Reason 2: Compromise becomes easier
Madhavan also stressed that every long-term relationship requires compromise. According to him, marriage naturally asks both partners to give up certain habits, beliefs and ways of living for the sake of building a life together.
He observed that as people grow older, they often become more attached to their routines and develop stronger boundaries about what they will or will not accept. This can make it harder for two people to adapt to each other, whereas younger couples may find it easier to grow together.
Reason 3: There are practical advantages too
The actor also spoke about the practical side of marrying earlier in life. He said one reason previous generations recommended it was because people could have children at a younger age and still have enough energy later in life to enjoy time with their adult children and grandchildren.
However, Madhavan was careful to point out that times have changed. He acknowledged that building a stable career now often takes much longer than it did in the past, leading many people to postpone marriage.
Why finding a partner can become harder
Madhavan added that delaying marriage sometimes leads people to create increasingly detailed expectations about the ideal partner. He said individuals may begin looking for someone who fits every aspect of their personal, professional, financial and social life, making the search more difficult over time.According to him, when those expectations continue to grow, people may start viewing every potential relationship as a compromise instead of focusing on building one together.
