Actor Madhavan shares a lesson for parents: How a simple code word helped a mother save her 14-year-old son from a party night that was turning dangerous
R Madhavan is currently basking in the success of Dhurandhar. The film, headlined by Ranveer Singh and directed by Aditya Dhar, premiered on the big screens on March 19. But besides his on-screen persona and remarkable versatility, the actor is also known to share glimpses of his personal philosophy on social media. Recently, the 55-year-old re-shared a post on his Instagram Stories, which shed light on the importance of building trust with children, encouraging open communication, and ensuring they feel safe enough to ask for help without fear of judgment.

The thoughtful write-up narrated an incident where a teenager’s quick decision to call his mother saved him from a party that took a turn for the worse. The factors leading to the lucky rescue were a simple code word, aka Mountain Dew and a parent who showed up for her child without any questions.

The note opened to an account where the mother recalled that one night her 14-year-old son texted her asking whether they had Mountain Dew at home. Since the family did not drink the beverage, it was their code word for ‘Come get me now’, indicating that something was wrong. The other code words were Sprite, meaning that there was an emergency and Water, which meant everything was fine.

As soon as the mother received the text, she did not text back, grabbed her keys and instantly drove to the place where his son was. After he got inside the car, the mother-son duo sat quietly for some time before the teen finally broke the silence, revealing that while he was at the party, some drunk older kids entered the house, which made him uncomfortable, and he decided to leave.

Instead of scolding his son, the mother simply told him that she was proud of him for texting her and letting her know. The next morning, the mother found out that the police had arrested the older kids as they vandalized the neighborhood. When the teen heard about the incident from his mother, he admitted to having a gut feeling that things might spiral out of control and hence texted her.

Parenting without judgment, just showing up

To this, the mother thanked her son for trusting the code and getting out of the place in time. She even reassured him, saying that he could always share anything with her without having to worry about the consequences. The post concluded with the mother pointing out that sometimes the best parenting hack is teaching kids that they always have an exit without forcing them to explain.

The post perhaps struck a chord with R Madhavan, as the actor is a father to 21-year-old son Vedaant, whom he shares with his wife Sarita Birje. The couple got married in 1999. Vedaant is also a national-level swimmer. Meanwhile, R Madhavan plays the role of Ajay Sanyal, the calm and calculating head of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) in Dhurandhar 2.
