Accidentally deleted an Instagram post? This hidden trick can bring it back. You only have 30 days to recover

Deleting an Instagram photo or Reel by accident can feel permanent, especially when years of memories, comments and engagement are attached to it. But hitting the delete button doesn't necessarily mean the content disappears immediately. Instagram has a Recently Deleted section that temporarily holds removed content, giving users a limited window to change their minds and restore it. The catch? For most posts and Reels, you have only 30 days before the content is automatically removed.

What happens when you delete an Instagram post?

When you delete content such as a photo, video or Reel, Instagram removes it from your public profile and moves it to Recently Deleted. According to a 2026 guide from Gizbot, users can recover deleted posts during these 30 days. Stories work slightly differently: a deleted Story that isn't in the Stories Archive may remain recoverable for only up to 24 hours. This means acting quickly is important if something disappears accidentally.

How to restore a deleted Instagram post?

The recovery process can be completed from Instagram's mobile app. Depending on your app version, some menu wording may vary slightly.

Step 1: Open Instagram and tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner.

Step 2: Tap the three-line menu in the top-right corner.

Step 3: Select Your activity.

Step 4: Scroll to Recently deleted, usually found under the section dealing with removed and archived content.

Step 5: Choose the photo, video, Reel or Story you want to recover.

Step 6: Tap the three-dot menu and select Restore.

Step 7: Confirm Restore when Instagram asks again. You may also be asked to verify that you own the account before the recovery is completed.

Once restored, a regular deleted post can return to the position it previously occupied on your profile rather than appearing as an entirely new upload.

Deleted or archived? Check before you panic

There's another possibility if a post suddenly seems to have disappeared: you may have archived it rather than deleted it. Archiving is different because the post is hidden from other users without being deleted. The Times of India recommends checking the Archive if you're unsure what happened to missing content. An archived post can simply be made visible again.

What if 30 days have already passed?

This is where the recovery window becomes important. Once Instagram's Recently Deleted period expires, the option to restore the content through this feature disappears. So, before assuming an accidentally deleted Instagram memory is gone forever, check Your activity → Recently deleted. A few taps may be enough to bring it back provided you haven't waited too long.
