Aamir Khan's rare ruby wedding ring for Gauri is unlike celebrity diamonds. It took '256 hours' to craft

Aamir Khan and Gauri Spratt's intimate wedding has sparked interest not just for its simplicity but also for Gauri's bespoke wedding ring. Designed by luxury jewellery brand QWEEN, the ring features a rare Madagascar ruby said to be "rarer than 1 ...

Aamir Khan gifted Gauri a rare Madagascar ruby ring that took over 3 months to source
Aamir Khan and Gauri Spratt chose to keep their wedding simple, private and away from the usual celebrity fanfare. The couple tied the knot at Aamir's Mumbai residence in the presence of their children, close family members and a few friends. While the ceremony was intimate, one detail from the wedding has been drawing a lot of attention ever since, Gauri's bespoke wedding ring.

Instead of following the trend of oversized diamond rings, Aamir chose a rare natural ruby for his wife. The custom-made piece, created by luxury jewellery brand QWEEN, is now making headlines for its unusual gemstone, detailed craftsmanship and the long process behind its creation.

A rare Madagascar ruby

The highlight of the ring is its natural cabochon-cut ruby sourced from Madagascar. According to the makers, finding the right stone itself was the most challenging part of the project.

Speaking to Hindustan Times Lifestyle, Amit Kumar, Co-founder and CEO of QWEEN, said, "It took more than 3 months to source the Ruby, taking 256 hours by karigars. 131 pairs of skilled hands. This is a Madagascar ruby, which is rarer than 1 in a million. The wedding ring is designed to look, quite literally, like royalty."

The jewellery brand also said the gemstone belongs to an exceptionally rare category of natural rubies, with less than 0.1% reaching this level of quality, making it one of the standout features of the ring.

More than 256 hours of craftsmanship

Once the gemstone was sourced, the work of creating the ring began. Rather than designing a regular wedding band, the idea was to make a piece that could be treasured and passed on through generations.

Amit Kumar told Hindustan Times Lifestyle, "Set in a prong setting, the ring required over 256 hours of craftsmanship, from design development to setting and finishing, before being completed by QWEEN'S 131 pairs of masterful hands."

He also explained that the team wanted to create something that looked unique instead of a design that felt like it had simply been picked from a jewellery collection.

Designed with a royal touch

The ring moves away from the usual gemstone setting. Instead of placing the ruby on a plain band, the stone sits inside a crown-inspired gold mount, giving it a regal appearance.

The ruby has been finished in a cabochon cut, which means it has a smooth, rounded surface instead of multiple facets. This style allows the stone's rich red colour to stand out and creates a soft glow when viewed from different angles.

Describing the finer details, Amit Kumar said, "The ruby is held by a scalloped gold gallery that peaks into points around the stone, echoing the shape of an actual crown, then drops into a band of fine milgrain beading, the kind of hand-finished detailing that historically marked coronation and heirloom jewellery. Turned on its side, the ring has the unmistakable silhouette of a bombé signet, high-domed, weighty, built to be noticed."

Several reports also state that the ring features around 40 natural diamonds set around the gold mount, adding another layer of detail to the bespoke design.

This is not the first personalised piece of jewellery Aamir has gifted Gauri. Earlier, she had been seen wearing a custom Brazilian aquamarine ring, also commissioned by the actor. For their wedding, however, he opted for a rare Madagascar ruby, making the ring a distinctive choice at a time when diamonds continue to dominate bridal jewellery.
