A welcome move: Twitter updates privacy settings, allows users to control info they share with some business partners

Twitter allows users to control their data - but there’s a catch!

In some regions, users can go ‘Allow additional information sharing with business partners’ setting in their Personalisation and Data setting and decide if they wish to share their personal data.
On Wednesday, Twitter announced some changes to its privacy settings. It’s no secret that Twitter uses non-public personal information of its users to personalise their Twitter experience, improve services and for some other purposes described in their privacy policy.

However, Twitter also shares non-public personal information of its users with some business partners, or to put it simply, the advertisers.

In what can be called a welcome move, Twitter has relinquished some of their control on the user information and have given the users a choice on whether they wish to share their personal data with the advertisers.

In some regions, users can go ‘Allow additional information sharing with business partners’ setting in their Personalisation and Data setting and decide if they wish to share their personal data. However, the catch here is that the setting applies to only particular types of partnerships, which Twitter has described in detail on their blog at help.twitter.com.

Moreover, the changes to this setting may not be immediate and it is valid only for certain geographical regions. “Additionally, though these partnerships may operate globally, the setting only applies in the specific regions as described below. This means that if a partnership is listed as being subject to the setting in a select region, then only Twitter customers in that region can use the setting as described,” the blog states.

You can head over to help.twitter.com to know the full list of partnerships and regions that allow the settings to function.

Mastodon started popping up on timelines after Twitter suspended Supreme Court lawyer Sanjay Hegde’s account twice. What followed was outrage against what many thought was Twitter’s high-handedness when dealing with issues like hate speech.

Many users migrated, and batted for Mastodon's stronger anti-abuse systems. This led to the social network's name trending on Twitter as users announced their new accounts. A number of users joined a 24-hour boycott of Twitter from Nov. 6 noon. In India, Twitter has more than 30 million users.
